M water jacket cover leak

Hey guys, i have been noticing some anti-freeze on the garage floor, so I cleaned it all up a couple days ago and went back today to check. There was a little on the floor and it seems to be coming from the water jacket cover (just behind the carb). Its brand new and I used gasket sealer on it but it is still leaking, almost weeping. I was thinking of running a good bead of rtv around the outside of the cover? any suggestions? thanks, Anthony

Anthony I had that problem with a 1951H I rebuilt back in 1999. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries. If the interior of that water jacket cover is pitted, you might have to purchase a new aftermarket cover.

those covers are thin and lots of times removing them they get distorted. also they get rusted out and thin and may just be no good. best to clean it up with a wire wheel and check its con dition. ooh but i see you say its new.
reguardless if thats whats leaking it has to come off and give it a check over along with the mating surface.
i notice you dont mention a gasket,.. did you put one in. sealer alone is not the answer.
with a new gasket and use permatex high tack sealer on both sides and guarantee it will not leak, thats if the mating surfaces are good. and torqued correctly.

Sometimes some will seep for a bit even using sealer and a gasket no matter how hard you try. My experience anyway. Maybe its just me. Been having good luck with cleaning both surfaces good, then brake cleaner. No gasket and just a 1/8 inch bead of silicon sealer. Snug enough to bond, then tighter later. Done the last 3 that way with no leaks yet.

I know this cant be done, correctly, but I painted mine a couple of times, on the outside while I was paintinig other stuff, and the paint seeped in and the leak has stopped.

a abundant coat of indian head gasket shelac on both sides of the gasket ought to do it. i had the same dilema the 1st time with mine.
or you can hit her with irontite, if your not inclined with removing it.

Also, realize a lot of those studs thread right into the inside of block. I use sealer on all the bolts also. If the studs don't come out it is difficult to clean old gasket and rust right up to the very edge also. Indian head works for me.

Maybe you tightened the nuts a bit too much and warped that new cover?

Is it coming from the cap screws or the gasket itself? If seeping from cap screws, take out one at a time and coat with anerobic sealant (available at NAPA) and reinstall. Worked for me on my H.
