Regarding earlier post 300 transmission

We moved it into the shop just now, it rolled fine forwards and backwards with the clucth released and the engine off. However when you start the motor and then try to release the clutch it stalls out. Is it possible the clutch has frozen or locked up somehow? Thanks for the replies on my earlier post and any on this one.

Never ran into something like this. When you push or pull the tractor in a gear the same dirrection as travel with the pedal pushed down.
Everything including the clutch plate should turn. But when you push the clutch pedal all the way down the T/A clutch is supposed to release and you may just be turning up into the T/A. But if all the gears in the t/a are still free that means something has the short clutch shaft back to the t/a or clutch plate locked. Can't figure how it would lock enough to stall the engine.
Also wonder if the T/A clutch parts came apart and locked the t/a clutch carrier. If the T/A clutch carrier was locked by the t/a pressure plate or clutch comming apart you still should have low t/a and the engine would drive the clutch shaft. Gears in the t/a could be torn up but the tractor shouldn't roll then unless completly stripped.
Think I would start by removing the cover from the t/a clutch compartment and see whats moving when a wheel is rolled. If you can see the shaft going to the main clutch turning when wheel is turned, you have me stumped. Worst comes to worst you can remove the belt pulley gear box or opening cover and complete t/a compartment cover and look at whats what. Also the cover under the main clutch. Anytime the flywheel turns the main clutch pressure plate does also and that drives the pto ahfts and gears. Also the main clutch shaft piliot bearing is in the flywheel, If it locked the clutch shaft it would turn with the flywheel. Main clutch plate should also lock and turn with the engine if it messed up or a piece got in there. Be interested to know what you find.
This tractor does have a t/a and a IPTO ?

Thought of something else. In case the t/a planet carrier has locked up, did you try to see if the tractor would go by engine power with the t/a handle pulled back. That would also depend on the t/a clutch releasing like its supposed to.
If the carrier was locked that would still let the tractor roll with clutch pedal in as long as the t/a clutch released. It would also lock up power to the transmission when the t/a clutch is engaged. Should still turn transmission when released, handle back.

Yes, it has both. Is it possible that the T?A came apart even if it is not engaged? The T?A on this tractor has been weak to non-existent since I bought it, so I never use it.

I'm thinking the planet gears have to be turning in the t/a planet carrier or the tractor wouldn't roll in gear. Maybe if the t/a clutch hasn't been used in a long time it won't disengage or the linkage or other problem won't let it disengage. If the t/a planet carrier bearings got bad enough and got hot enough to kind of weld to things so that the carrier was locked, that would kill the engine if the t/a clutch won't disengage. Since I can't see the tractor i'm just throwing out some thoughts about were the problem could be.
Still thinking, scratch part of that, if the planet gear carrier is locked up and the t/a clutch won't disengage the tractor wouldn't roll in gear pulling it.
Also does this tractor still have the t/a handle and linkage hooked up. If not and the short connector rod from the main clutch operating shaft to the t/a clutch operating shaft is still there. That may be releasing the t/a clutch and letting tractor roll in gear. But if you don't have a t/a handle that will release the t/a clutch. When you let the main clutch pedal back up it engages the t/a clutch. This could kill the engine if something has the t/a clutch carrier locked from turning, or the planet carrier is locked. If you don't have a t/a handle, try operating the t/a clutch manualy and see if the engine kills.

IT seems to me!
The TA assembly moves in the direction of engine rotation when in direct ((handle forward). It is stationary when the TA lever is back, in reduction (unless coasting faster than moving in that gear)
If ((if))the trans is in Neutral, and the tractor rolls forward and backwards, then the issue is not in the trans output shaft, but could be in any portion that rotates with the clutch out and the trans in Neutral.
If the tractor locks up and will not move when in any gear, then the issue is in the countershaft, or the front trans input shaft bearing(not at the intermediate bearing at the 4th 5th slider).
If the engine bogs and will not drive the tractor, and bogs even in neutral, even if the ramp and rollers were toast, as in jammed and locked up, it would move with the TA released unless the TA throwout is not releasing the TA clutch from the housing.
If the tractor moves in gear, and if looking at the TA unit through the cover as suggested, the TA rotates, I have no idea how the engine could bog. Jim

If a Farmall, it's real easy to pull the inspection covers over the TA housing and look to see what's going on.

Thanks for all the input. I checked the clutch Saturday and it it is locked, the throw-out bearing doesn't touch the fingers until the clutch pedal is depressed. They are locked down, possibly a spring or something broken. It probably would have moved itself if I had the nerve to let the clutch completely out' but I was afraid of tearing something up really bad. I am going to split it and fix this and some other issues. Regarding splitting, there are the eight bolts on the frame rails and two going to the block from the seat end. Are there any others that I need to know about?

Yes thats the main bolts to remove engine, also 2 dowel pins. Do you mean the t/a clutch carrier, part the t/a pressure plate bolts to is locked by something that came loose from the clutch assembly? t/a release bearing isn't supposed to push the t/a pressure plate fingers unless the t/a handle is pulled back or the clutch pedal is pushed all the way down. When in direct or high t/a the t/a clutch assembly along with the carrier all turns when the drive shaft from the clutch does. Unless you can see something that came loose in the t/a clutch compartment keeping the unit from turning the problem maybe something else. When the t/a handle is back the driveshaft from the main clutch just turns the input shaft of the t/a and the t/a clutch carrier sits still. T/A clutch parts can be replaced with the behind engine split. If the center housing needs out there is a 5/8 bolt inside the housing above the tee shaped plate on the bottom rear of housing.

It is the main clutch, engine to driveshaft that I'm referring to, so split there all I need to remove are the bolts that I asked about or are there others?
