Plowing with a Super M

From what I understand a Super M was rated as a 3 plow tractor. I would guess it is safe to say that refers to 14" bottoms. Is that figured plowing in 2nd or 3rd gear? I pull 2-16's with mine and in easy going ground it will pull in 3rd but usually 2nd works better.

Factory rated at 3 bottoms. But it really depends on
the ground.Some places 2x14 is PLENTY,some places a
4 could be pulled. Also depends on how deep and the
condition of the tractor.

I pull 3-14's in reasonable ground with my regular M in 2nd gear. My tractor isn't upgraded to additional horsepower. I am thinking a super M was rated for 3-16's and guessing 2nd gear. They may have rated them using mounted plows. I'm sure someone here knows more about it than me.

ground is the factor. but around here if the farmall m or w-6 cant pull 3/16 in 3rd gear something wrong with it. i remember when i was young and the j. d. salesman came to the field when dad was plowing with the w-6 and 3/16 jd #55 plow. he was trying to sell dad a jd tractor. dad put the tractor in 4th gear with the salesman and made a complete round with the plow. that was that , no jd tractor ever come to the farm. i even did plowing with that tractor and plowed in 3rd gear. still have the plow too.

Had a Super M at the farm that had been converted to run propane. I pulled a 4 bottom 14" in third gear all the time. BUT we are in the sand hills of south central Kansas. Does not take much to plow sand except to crawl up the hills.

There are many factors on what a tractor will pull,
from the ground, moisture, sod, tire condition,
ballast/weights tractor tune and what shape the plow
is in and how well it's set up to work with the
tractor. We pulled 3-14's with our Super M in ground
ranging from a sandy loam to a heavy loam. I remember
one August and I was trying to turn down wheat stubble
and get ready for wheat again. It was hotter than
usual for central Michigan- the upper 90's and it had
been dry. It was not having a good time pulling the 3-
14's. I was wondering if I should go get the 2-16's we
had for our John Deere A. Dad mentioned to me that if
I was going to work his tractor that hard maybe I
should change the oil before heading back out, I can't
remember if he told me to or I did it by myself but I
changed the oil and filter and used straight 40 weight
oil. Same conditions but the tractor temperature
dropped about 40 degrees and she handled the plow much
better. Didn't plow to much before I wore out a set of
plow points but the tractor didn't seem to be running
any hotter or heavier than when we baled the straw.

I pull a fast hitch 3-16 with my 400 diesel in 2nd or 3rd, depending on the soil conditions, here in north east ohio.

I believe an M would have been 14" bottoms and a Super M would have been rated with 16" bottoms.

That said, I've pulled 3-14's with two different Super Ms on Dad's farm and it's all either tractor wanted in 2nd gear. On the hills you're down in 1st and lifting the plow out of the ground just to make it without running out of power.
