IH 686 ,because i had one years ago and it was our main tractor. They are a great all around tractor not to big and great for small jobs now.

For a loader tractor, there has never been a better one built than a 674/574 with a 2250 loader. The slapstick shifter was easy to operate and the compact size made it easy to maneuver.

My collector side would love a SMDTA w/power steering, wide front and fast hitch.

For use I would like 656. Just seems about the perfect size for a loader for my small acreage. Price wise I think I probably end up with a gas 460 or 560.

I have 5 diesels ,SMD SMDTA 450D 460D 560D I think my favorite is the 460D because it is narrow front fast hitch power sterring and runs great, not that the others dont but it seems the most versatile small enough to trim mow,or big enough to plow with 3 bottom,I dont have ant thing newwer than a 560,and nothing larger, hope this helps

I'm specifically bringing a 460 diesel back to life. I can pull a 3 bottom roller over plow with it. It is small and manuverable yet it has big power for its size. I'm told it is economical on fuel and I love the lines of the 60 series. And the one I have was born the same year as me, 1959
I will eventually have a 560 diesel also.
If I ever found a deal on a 450 diesel, might have to consider it

I dont have a 'single' favorite.I like em all!I would choose : 450D; 560D; 1206; 1456...I really like my 706,826,1256.The 706DT (310 turbo) is the favorite in my 'stable'.

super m diesel TA just one of the best classics of all time restore it perfect paint just put in isolated part of shop and admire!!!! Get something else to do work.

i would be a wd40's picker, cause i collect and cause they are north america's first diesel wheeled tractor, from 1934-1940 with a nice wide stance to them and and their own unique engine sound. and even the art of starting a diesel with the hand crank. truely a grear tractor that so many people have not even seen.
and as far as everyday tractors there is a lot of good ones out there that can be had anytime.

I was asking because I am in a dilemma I have the opportunity purchasing a 560 diesel fast hitch or a 686 with the 310 diesel? I want both but I cant?
Oppinions?

Without the benefit of knowing the actual conditions of each tractor, I would choose the 686. It is much more modern and the factory 3 point is so much better than a 2 point fast hitch.

Any tractor with 361 or 407. They were the best engines in the industry at the time they were new.

I like the fast hitch. The 686 is probably the better choice. Nostalgia makes me choose the 560 had a couple of them over years and always liked them. But the old girl might take a lot of work to keep smokin along.

Definitely a diesel 454 (which is what we have) as it does everything I ask it to do on our hilly land and never complains, it's nicely maneuverable, and it's comfortable driving on the road between our two fields. If I ever decided I wanted to plow more bottoms or mow a wider swath I could see going to its slightly heftier brother 574.

no mension of this in your first post, easy now, take the 686 its a more modern tractor with improvements. got everyone picking tractors out of the blue and not answering your question.

400 diesel, because i have wanted a gas start diesel for about 25 years, and this one came up for sale 2 years ago about 5 miles from home.I bought it,did some minor repairs to it, and got a chance to spray about 200 acres with it and do about 6 hours of plowing in my off time.

Of your two choices, I would say the 686. I run a 684 and it is a very handy sized tractor. Pretty easy on fuel, good size for a small farm, starts easy, good 3 point, etc. All of the factors are important to me. I loved my smaller 454 diesel but the 684 handles my implements better and allows me to do my jobs, just a bit quicker.

If you want a collector tractor, buy the 686 and later on pick up a letter series to look at and for some chores.

966 or 856. 856 is the first choice but I never envision them as anything but discing tractors. Ours was a wheatland with no pto or three point so we just pulled with it. Seeing a wheatland now is kind of rare.

966 was our loader tractor. Loved that thing except for its hair trigger clutch.
