Farmall 300 transmission

The transmission on my tractor has locked up. I was bushogging in reverse, cleaning up between some trees and the next thing I have no gears, it would roll with the clutch depressed but as soon as you release it tries to stall like its locked in two gears. All the shift rails are lined up and they will move. Any ideas? Thanks

is the pto engaged or disengaged when you let out the clutch? maybe picked up root and is jammed in there.

My H did that one time and I found out that the pilot bearing had blown up and jammed the shaft so that the tractor acted like it was in 5th gear. It would act like it was in two gears if I had it in any gear but 5th, but it 5th or neutral it would act like it was in 5th. Do you have the transmission drive PTO or the IPTO?

I think you are correct. If the tractor will roll with the clutch down, there is no real gear lockup happening, unless it is in a gear other than fifth. at which point it would be locked up and not move if pushed. If the TA or other component were locked up it would either not move, or it would not bog the engine. Starting in (effective) fifth with that bearing locked would feel like it was in two gears. It might be possible to drive it home in TA reduction if it is not too rough or muddy.
The quick way of finding out if the pilot (intermediate trans bearing is frozen) is to jack up one wheel and see if it will drive that wheel forward. It should be in neutral for this test. Jim

Mine has IPTO. Right now it sitting in front of my shed, transmission drained and the PTO removed. I haven't found any metal shavings or anything like that yet. Is there any way to check for a broken fork with out pulling the cover off?

Does the engine run? If the pto drive is locked up the engine would be also. Does the tractor roll free in gear with clutch pedal pushed in?
If so, remove the pin from the short rod to the t/a clutch operating shaft. Will it still roll in gear with clutch pedal pushed down? Need the answers to give my opinion.

If a fork is broken, or slid on the rail, it will be possible to operate the tractor in Neutral. In most cases, the broken fork (if it is broken) will allow it to be in one gear. (any gear) if the fork is broken it could be broken in 5th. If so the engine will bog just like it would if starting in 5th. Jacking a wheel up is easiest. if it is 5th, that single wheel will spin at high RPM. if 4th not so much.
If the intermediate bearing is jammed, it will appear to be in high gear, because that is what the high gear does, is lock the two shafts together. What ever you find, it is 90% probable that the top will need to come off.
