farmall m with 2-71 detroit

I love the sound of the two stroke diesel plus i have one rebuilt on my floor and want to put it in somthing

Does a 2-71 have a SAE sized flywheel housing? Check to see if it will fit between the M's frame rails. If the flywheel is flush with the flywheel housing, you will need a second flywheel stacked on top of the first one, to reach the input shaft. Make an adapter plate for the bell housing, a front motor mount, and have pictures posted by Friday.

I was given an(incomplete) 2-71 years ago.I had just read in RPM about a factory kit to "convert".I thought it would be SO COOL!Finally decided it would just be too cost prohibitive.Eventially just gave the engine away.

At one time there was a kit to put a 2-something Detroit in a Farmall M, wasn't there? Good luck finding a kit after being out of production 50-60 years, though.

Sure, it's possible. All you need is enough time, $$$, a good machinist that can cut you an adapter plate, someone that can weld, and materials.

While I do like the sound of a Detroit 2 stroke diesel, I do NOT like the sound of a 2 cylinder, 2 stroke diesel. Reminds me too much of a John Deere B, but I'd rather listen to the B.

There was an article in Red Power several years ago
about that.Seems Detroit did make a kit, they sold
only a very small'handful'.At the time of the
article, there was only one such tractor known to
exist. No parts were available and the
'records'/plans had been destroyed.The writer
acctually built one from 'scratch'!The tractor was
superbly done, looked 'factory'.Bet he spent LOTS of
money and time on that one!

(quoted from post at 19:37:37 12/10/12) how hard is it to covert a farmall m with a regular engine to a 2-71 detroit diesel.

Well... it would be pretty easy with a set of original instructions once you were able to modify a bell housing (think machining & welding if you have the correct bell housing to get close) and a flywheel. The original package consisted of a model 2055 engine with special bell housing and flywheel. You used the ring gear from your stock flywheel and put it on the one supplied by GM. The rest was fabrication and installation.

You will also need a 2-71 with a variable speed governor.

The digital copies of poor photostats on my website (jarootfarms.com) list the parts list and part numbers etc...

The little GM sounds NOTHING like a 2 lung Deere... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGls7UOiCP0

If you go to http://www.jarootfarms.com/gallery there is a folder with all of the photos I took while going through my GM powered M. Unfortunately I didn't split it at the engine and therefore there are no good photographs of the bell housing or flywheel, the two important components of the formula..

I also have GM Engineering Service Bulletin instructions for a Case LA and a Farmall F20 or F30 (forget which one). The F series uses a 2-71 also but you don't need a special bell housing I don't believe. I'll see if I can get some time to digitize them and upload them to my website later this week or weekend.

With any luck I hopefully will have my M @ Lima for the 2013 RPRU next June...

(quoted from post at 17:52:15 12/10/12) Why don"t you just buy a 4 cylinder diesel tractor ?

Because that wouldn't be the same thing...

Why do I have an MD when I could have a 1206???
