5088 pros / cons

Have been considering getting a tractor with a cab and air...would u consider a 5088 a good option? How much is one Indiana worth? 8,000 hours been overhauled 3,000 hours ago. Looks pretty decent. Where these know for anything particularly good or bad? Not familiar with anything this "new" :)
Thanks Reaver

Cousin bought a used one last couple years that we farmed. He was concerned with the age of the 1066 and 1466. Nice tractor, rides, drives, shifts nice. There wasn't anything negative I could find with it.

Cons-not a lot of them made so parts may get tough to find. Make sure the transmission has been updated. Poor orginal paint that fades. Most were repainted by now.

Pros- easier shifting transmission than the 86 series tractors. Nice tractor to operate. Last model built by IH.

The people trying to sell them are generally REAL proud of 'em. You can get the same power, often in better condition, for a lot less $$$ in a 66 or 86 series.

2WD 5x88 series are pretty helpless if the going gets tough, too. Dad tested a used one one fall. Got in a little mud with the manure spreader, it spun a little, and that was it. We couldn't budge it with the 1066, so we had to go back and get my brother and the 856 too.

Once the tractor was out, we backed the 1066 (2WD, BTW) into the same hole that the 5088 came out of, hooked up the spreader, and drove out without spinning a wheel. That sealed the 5088's fate. It went back to the dealer on Monday.

Echo what others said, not very many made so limited used parts. Meant to replace the 1086. They made over 47,000 1086's, only a little under 9,000 5088's. With that many hours I would think the trans had been updated but might want to ask. Also thos 88 series bring big money compared to a 66 or 86. The cab is a little better on a 88 than 86. You don't want a factory cab on a 66, they are awful.

I don't know if it means anything but back in the day we had a 5288 and it had alot of pto problems. Jim

I had two 5088's when I retired from farming. One replaced a 1086. Cab size is definately larger on the 5088 with more knee room as well as cooler in hot weather with the reverse flow rad fan. You can't even compare the transmissions, the 5088 has much easier to shift trans. That same trans was upgraded to full powershift in the 7110 series. Never had any pto problems, only problem with one of the 5088's was a hi/lo transmission upgrade.

First all of all what are you comparing it to? For it's era, the 88 series is a very good tractor. the only thing I didn't like about mine was the way the door opened. Always seemed backwards to me. I think the 5088 has the 436 IH engine. Very economical on fuel if used right. Check external_link for pricing. Should give you an idea what they're worth in your area.

Is there room for your right knee so you can turn in the seat to see your implement, unlike in the Magnums?

I wonder if Case hired the guy away from JD who designed their sound-guard cab. They put a console right in the way of turning to see your implement.

We had one and it was worthless until we put 42" Rubber on it and it was like a whole new tractor traction wise.
