H Charging System

Hello all. Latest project is 1952 H that was sitting in a field for 10 years. Current problem is the charging system. Still 6v with dist. and 3 position switch. Cleaned genny and all connections, polarized it and checked connections. With tractor off and lights on ammeter shows discharge, with tractor running at idle needle at 0, with lights on shows discharge. When tractor is revved up ammeter goes to full discharge and stays there and seems warm. Followed John T's trouble shooting chart, changed the VR and ammeter couple of times. Thinking every thing has to go. Not a show tractor, just to use as a chore tractor. Sorry about the long post but am curious. Thanks, Allan.

So, what happend when you ran my Para 5 procedure and dead grounded the Gennys FLD post with it running??????? Did it charge then??????? If not did it charge if when still running and FLD grounded you temporarily jumped BAT and GEN/ARM together which by passes the Cutout relay function????????

If it still dont charge with both those checks and the genny has a good frame ground (does it???) and the belt is good and the rest of the wiring is correct, sounds like a bad genny. HOWEVER if it charges ONLY with FLD grounded but NOT otherwise (tells me genny is okay), the VR is bad (if its a VR) or the VR isnt well grounded,,,,,,,,or if its a cutout relay and light switch controller the light switch isnt well grounded,,,,,,,,or the wires bad from FLD on genny to light switch or FLD on a VR

John, did all the checks and still same results. When genny field dead grounded, running tractor it shows no charge, in fact that is when the ammeter first went to full discharge. Also, I could not get the genny to motor on the bench but I could get it to spark when driven on bench and field temp grounded. Probably bad genny as you suggest. Thanks, Allan.

Youre welcome, if all else is okay and wired right and dead grounding the FLD dont make her charge and she also flunked the bench Motor Test, Id say youre right, likely a badddddddd genny but thats nothing money wont fix right??? lol

Take care

No offense..... is the battery installed backwards? I had a 46 H do the same thing, I had the battery hooked up negative ground, switched it to positive ground and it was charging.
AGAIN...no offense....just sometimes it's the little things that get ya !!

Battery is in correct. I have to always double check myself because I have a 1950 Case SC that is negative ground and all the rest of my tractors are positive ground. Allan.

have a 1950 mccormick. put new brushes in the generator and a new VR. still will not charge unless you jump field to ground. checked the grounds and everything looks good. has the old 3 position light switch. Is there a procedure for checking the VR/cutout cuircuit.

Thanks Tom
