806 trans problem

Looking at a 806 been sitting for years due to tranny problem.
I'm not familiar with farmall so forgive me first. I believe the
high low lever is stuck it looks like some one had
disconnected it on top of the tranny. My question. Is this a
common problem. Do I go in from the side to check it out or
do I pull the deck and go in from above. The owner will sell for
cheap but I'm not sure what Im in for if I have to do a major
tans job. Tractor runs good just will not move. Thanks

Well the only thing you can do from the top is remove the transmission shift cover amd take a look , BUT you must also remover the side cover as when you remove the top the reverse shifting fork will fall out of place and more then likely the woodworf key will fall out because the reverse shifter shaft is worn . I am not sayen that this is the problem as i have not looked at it so i am guessing . My guess is that the shifter cam is wore out the shift lever is shot the top cover is toast the detents are history rollers are long gone and ya may find them in the hyd. filter at some point . This is the easy stuff to do , digging into you wallet is NOT . Now if you see something like teeth missing on the last gear or the reverse driven gear due to someone dropping it into park while still moving or it jumped out of park due to a wore out park linkage NOW this is where the fun begins as now you get to tear the WHOLE rearend apart to get to that gear as it is the LAST OUT and FIRST in . And while ya got it down either for a shift cover rebuild or a rear end tear down NOW is the time to install a Spring loaded park lock. Ho yea forgot there WILL BE LOTS OF FINGER smashen .

Well that gives me a good idea what I could me in store for. $500.00. For the tractor and a lot of work. I will do some exploring and then make a decision. Thanks alot

Well if you don't want it let me know as one thing for sure i am not afraid of it . as i have fixed worse ones . and having a second 806 in the stable would not bother use.

Why?? i find nothing wrong with what came on it. They shift just fine for me . If i want a 56-66 shifter then i will buy one of them on a 56-66 sires tractor . Do you realize what all you have to change to do this , when all it takes to keep a 06 tractor shifting good is keeping the clutch trans brake and dump valve adjusted . Then your not tugging jerking tryen to shift it .

Early 806,with foot activated park lock? Even the later park lock was known to tear up a transmission if engaged while tractor was moving.I always updated these with the newer park lock units IH sold whenever I got a 706 or 806 in.Did help a lot to eliminate that problem.

It's a lot easier to just fix what you have than go thru all the work of putting a 56 shifters on an 06. My 806 shifted terrible and was a real PITA to get into rev. The at our CIH dealer got me a rebuilt range shift deck with all the goodies on it. That place readjusting the linkages & putting in a new bushing on the range shift lever it now shifts as good as they did new. All for less than $250.

Can you explain how the updated park lock eliminates the problem?

We've got all late-style park locks on 56 and 66 series tractors. If the range transmission is in Neutral, you can drop the park lever while the tractor is still rolling.
