Super H seal removal

My Dad is trying to remove the seal that goes around the shaft that
powers the hydraulic pump on his 1953 Super H (stage 1) and is
unable to get it out. This is the shaft in the belly of the tractor
below the driveshaft. Any suggestions or helpful hints would be
appreciated.

If the drive couplings and shaft are removed there's several ways to do it. What works for me 98% of the time is to use a 1/2 inch X 3 bar about 2 foot long. with the shaft turned to the right place and tractor in gear brakes locked. Place bar in slots than hit the end of the bar with a big hammer to break loose. Or with a helper place the bar in slots, trans in neutral, pto in gear, then turn the pto. best if you have a old pto coupling to put on the pto shaft. Let the bar turn to the housing when turning the pto.
Turn shaft or coupling counter clockwise when facing them. Standard threads on the coupling.
If the hydraulic unit is removed a tool to use on a impact gun can be made up for the coupling removal.
Only problem is once in a great while a bad tight one will bend my bar.

I'm not sure I understand what I'm supposed to be turning. The belly pump has been removed and now my Dad is trying to remove the seal on the front of the transmission that is held in place by a 4 bolt retainer. The 4 bolts have been removed but the retainer will not budge. Is it threaded on? Or is it supposed to slide off the shaft? There is no room to get anything behind it to slide it forward, except maybe the tip of a very small screwdriver. I keep thinking we are missing something here.

He's instructing you on how to remove the drive coupler. It has to come out before the retainer.

Steel piece in front of the seal retainer with slot is actually a nut screwed on the shaft, part of it is what the seal rides on. It needs screwed off before the seal retainer will come off. It screws off the same direction a standard nut does.
