4th gear in a M

Gonna take an M apart this weekend to replace 4th gear .I"m thinking that we need to split the tractor to pull the shaft out the front .Is this right ? i"m gonna pick up a IT manule tonight to .Can i buy them new or where is the best place to get these gears ?
 
That is wrong. You do not need to split the tractor to pull the shaft. Here is the link to my 3/4 size M (its an H...) Everything is about exactly (hyd pump drive coupling is the only thing I can think of majorly different) the same but smaller on an H.

IIRC S teiners sells the replacement gear. I would replace EVERY seal while in there. I don't think you would have more than $100 in it and you SHOULDN'T have any leaks when you are done. It is going to take some time to get your replacement gear so you will have some time.
 
How heavy is the deck? I need to pull one on a 1946H that has a broken bull cage piece in the bottom of the case. Don't ask how that happened. :(
 
The H deck is heavy for one but manageable if you have to. Much better with two if you have a helper, which I don't. If you take the seat and steering column off first that makes a big difference. Bare deck I would guess maybe 80-100# but that is just a guess, I have not weighed one. I have bull pinion cages from parts tractors if you need one.

I bought a few new gears for an H about 5 years ago and wished I had looked harder for good used ones. They were Chinese and did not impress me at all. I found some good gears for my M but still have them as I did not need any in it.
