change field coil

Not difficult. The hardest part is often getting the retainers out of the iron cores of the coils. Time and rust can make the screws tough to loosen. AN impact screwdriver is a good tool to have on hand. (hammer struck handle with multiple tips for various screws) The leads are usually ring terminals, but some are soldered. I would sure look at it to see if it was feasible. Find the new field windings first. Jim

Those big screws that hold the field coil iron pole shoes in place seem to really FREEZE IN PLACE. Ive seen the local genny shops here take a big hammer and give the gennys outer case around where those huge screws are A GOOD HARD SHARP RAP and then use a hammer driven big impact screwdriver and they come right out........ Its gonna take a good cleaning and solder job (then heat shrink) to make the connections and where the 2 windings splice in the middle keep that tucked away and safe. When doing all this Id have the commutator turned and undercut if needed,,,,,,,,Install new brushes if needed,,,,,,,,Install bushings if needed.....Insure good grounds on both the genny and VR,,,,,,Polarize the genny prior to start up

There is a special tool that clamps on like a c-clamp that is used to remove the screws. It works better than the impact drivers. A good ele. shop should have it. The local shop here in mid Mn. has one.

I always use impact driver tool and the new phillips head screws work great. Also, remember, the shoes should go back into same spot just in case they were fitted and they have a longer leading edge of shoe which goes in direction of rotation. We made a tool once upon a time that we used in the arbor press. It didn't work out very well. Boss didn't want to buy factory one.

Once you get the OLD bolts with the Phillip's head "Beat" out of them,I would recommend you replacing them with ones with the Allen head in them.

I use a hand held impact driver and a bench vise. Clamp the housing in the vise with enough force that striking the screw(s) on the top side with the impact driver will not distort the case.
