The key for my Kubota would fall out from time to time. After I lost one - I tied some rawhide shoe lace on it with a loop in other end to hook over the throttle leaver. Never had a problem again.

Our Massey 35 has a key and after I dropped it in the snow out of the ignition once and spent several happy minutes looking for it I put it on about a foot of very light chain that was on hand and put the other end that had a clip on the throttle lever base. It has fallen out a few times since then but just dangles till needed. None of the other tractors I have had has had a key and that makes life easier.

The Dairy farm I worked at in Oklahoma had a John Deere 55 combine, it had been modified in that the grain head had been cut down and they installed a pick-up from a baler or forage harvester. It was used for alfalfa seed, nothing else. We were getting ready to runs alfalfa seed so it was brought up from the shed on one of the rental farms and parked next to the calf hutches while we were greasing it, changing oil and making it ready to run. Is was milking and the owner"s kids, two boys 7 & 10, come into the parlor "Shawn you got to crawl up in the tank of the combine and get the key out before Dad finds out" . I finished what cows I had in the parlor and went out to the combine and looked, no key in the grain tank, I ask the boys how came to be believed that the key was in the tank? "Oh we threw it trying to get it up by the seat and missed" I told them they"d have to go and tell their Dad (they didn"t look to happy about that). A day or so later I saw the boy"s father and ask if the kids told him, he said they had and if he hadn"t been sick at the moment he might of snuffed the little nerds out. About 6 months later we were moving calf hutches and found the key. I don"t know what the fuss was about the key, they ran alfalfa that year and the combine started fine by sticking a piece of wire in the key slot and turning it.

All of my tractors have toggle switches instead of keys. Nobody could steal them: shifting requires knowledge of the secret combination.
