B-450 Thoughts

Just ran onto what I consider a strange Farmall. Model B 450 Diesel row crop. Looks alot like a Super M but has a direct start diesel. Engine not stuck, tires maybe usable. What do yall think of these tractors, im in north texas, I have read most of these imported were sent to the south and to texas. Serial number appears to make it a 1959 model. I have had a few wd6 and a wd9 all started fair from gas to diesel. Are these direct start models made to start easier or will I be pulling it off everytime. Also what rear section do these tractors use. Whats a decent price not knowing if it will run. If I buy it cheap enough have plans of possible building a set of injectors maybe putting a turbo on it.

I don't know a lot about them but I believe B-450 is the British version of the 450. Probably not many in the states. Would be rare because of that.

The Farmall B-450 is an excellent and very rare tractor in the USA. Buy it and you will not regrett it. However, you will be much more satisfied if you get rid of all of the Lucus electrical components. You can convert the starter to Delco and the generator to a modern alternator. However, most importnt, there are conversion kits available to convert the glow plugs which will give you much more reliable strting, even if you leave everything else Lucus.

Many components will exchange with SM, 400, 450's but many are unique British. The Farmall B-450 was only sold in Texas and the Southeast, although a few did get scattered to other parts of the US.

The ones sold in the Misissippi Delta gave excellent service but were quickly outgrown as equipment and power requirements grew larger fast in the 60's.

If it is anything like my B275, you will have a very good tractor. The glow plug system is not by Lucas, it is German Bosch, identical to that used by Mercedes-Benz cars until 1977 or so.

The B450 tractor was built by IH at Doncaster here in the UK from 1958 to 1970. It used a glowplug started indirect injection diesel engine of 264 cu in same size as a SM. 5 speed transmission with no TA or indipendent PTO option but fitted with a diff lock. Hydrulic lift unit mounted on top of the rear axle with cat 2 linkage and live pump on engine. They were build as a standard tractor and a Farmall rowcrop tractor. Done a lot of work on one of these tractors baling hay and straw with a UK built B55W wire tying baler. A good hard working tractor but not very handy for getting on and off. MJ

Why did IH continue to produce a glorified M for so long in the UK?

They didn't even update the styling!!!

That said, I would jump on a B450 if I had the chance. It's the ultimate M.

Most of the B450s were exported to the British colonines and other countries. In 1959 I waited at a railway crossing while a train load of new B450 tractors went by from Doncaster to the docks. Now all we see on the trains are containers with China shipping co on the side of them. MJ

Original glow plug systems on Farmall B-450's imported and sold in Texas and the Southeast (Miss. Delta,, Ark. Delta, and La.) were Lucus. Several diff3rent conversions were and are available but I am not famaliar with a Bosch conversion for the B-450glow plug system.
