I brought one home yesterday with no serial number tag. How do you tell the difference between a 400 and a 450? Thanks!

Things change, so these are a guide
The original paint on a 400 was all red except the dash panel (medium dark grey). 450 white lower side panels where INTERNATIONAL is printed, and white grill.
Engine in 400 is C-264. Engine in 450 C-281
Date codes on major castings Late 53 to late 56.
450 late 56 to end of prod.
Early 400 had FH with tilt cylinder under right front of hitch. Later and 450 had a D handled draft control and no extra cylinder.

Quick spotting feature (assuming it still has the original engine): A 400 will have the characters "C264" cast into the right side of the block above the oil filter canister.

A 450 will show "C281" in this location.

Most but not all 400 have a flat bottom gas tank, the 450s have a large dimple on the bottom. I was told that the small tank would not run till noon and IH started supplying larger tanks for some 400 and all of the 450.

Original 400 will have a 6 digit engine serial number. 450 engine serial number no more than 5 digits. 400 chassis has a threaded hole in the lower end of the clutch pedal with a set bolt and lock nut. 450 just has a undrilled lower end clutch pedal. With a T/A, follow the operating rod from the T/A lever to its attaching point. That small lever on a 400 has a number 359907R1.
450 has number 366352R1 on the lever.
If the tractor has the original engine the month built can be determined by its serial number.

On a 450, you can switch the hydraulic valves from one-way to two-way without removing the hood. The spools will protrude through the top of the cowling over the instrument panel.

My dad bought a Farmall 400 demonstrator from Thomas Brothers in Fairview, MT. It had 3 lever hydraulics and Fast-Hitch.
I remember getting the flat bottom tank changed out for the "deep" bottom tank after a year or so.

Another thing, would the 450 transmission top cover have tapped holes for mounting the top cylinder arm for the fast hitch?
