656 options, Your opinions, Please.

I have a 656 utility hydro diesel with some issues in the hydro, I initially bought it with the idea that if the hydro was shot, I could transplant the engine into Dad's 656 Row-crop, gear trans, Gas. I really like the utility and another option I'm considering is transplanting the gear trans. to the utility. Any thought or advice?

whats wrong with the hydro? It could be a simple external fix. There is seperate releif valves for forward and reverse, If the tranny slips going forward try moving the same load up the same hill in reverse if it moves it that way it the forward releif valve, same applied to the opposite for the reverse releif. there is also a dump valve (clutch valve) that can get to the point where oil gets to leaking by inside causing it to slip in either direction. We have a mechanic here that knows where to put gauges in the system to check pressures and he has fixed our hydros in the past. This info is what i have learned when talking to him. I also know that there is places that will fix the internal parts alot cheaper than others so my point is dont condem the hydro too quickly.

besides from my understanding it is cheaper to find another tractor with a gear drive and transplant your good engine and other parts than to replace the hydro tranny with a gear drive as too much stuff is different.

Get the books and a test gauge, there are a lot of small things that can go wrong, but are easy to fix. If you decide to scrap the Hydro part, I am looking for some linkage pieces on the shifter.
