Does anyone have magic for getting the key out of the brake shaft actuator on an H? I am tying to get the cover off.

It is a common Woodruff Key (IIRC) Take a cold chisel and use it flat against the shaft and peel the key out. Jim

no magic, just hit it at one end with punch and it will turn then can grab it with vise grip.

Jim,

Will probably be asking again when I have to take brake drum off. I am working in Minnesota next week, so will probably be the weekend.

They are flat on both sides, but round into the shaft. They stick out of the shaft and look pretty square there. Jim

i better stop correcting myself, cause i was right the first time, its basically a half moon key as i call them.

No need to remove that part for cover removal.
May need to remove the key and shaft after the cover is removed to get the brake shoe pins out if stuck.

Take a diagonal cutting pliers and grind the back side so the cutting edge matches the rounded back similar to a wood chisel. This lets your plier get a bite on the key so you can grip & remove the key by lifting the plier handles upward.
