Those are a neat looking plow. They say the dirt will really fly when they are running. Nice find!

In eastern Nebraska, we callec them "Terrace Plows" because that is what they were mostly used for.

Henry,
Good find! I was very lucky as I found a completely restored Whirlwind Terracer here in Wisconsin that was for sale by a widow of the man who restored it.
She also gave me some historical data, plus I gleaned more from off the web.
The Servis Equipment Company in Dallas, TX, built them off the IH #8 plow frame. They also made a few for Ford (have never seen one) and also an economical one without the 3-speed tranny mounted on top.
I run my Terracer for a few minutes at our annual Spring Plowday and people love to watch the dirt fly. At the big Badger Steam & Gas show it stops people in their tracks when they first see it.
The restorer did a very accurate job with the painting.
I have several photos if you would like for reference in your restoration...but I only know how to email them. My email is open.
I also have our PlowDay video in my "Favorites" and would send it to you if I can get someone to show me how to send that. I am not very good at getting along with my computer!

Henry,
I didn't look close enuf at your photos when I wrote my first reply. I see you have the model without the 3-speed transmission. That might be more rare today than the model I have.
Go to UTube and type in Whirlwind Terracer and you will see some Nebraska guys working their terracer plows. I think one of them has the model you now have.
I have the complete hitch that Servis put on the plow, but it is not for soils with any rocks. You could put a regular #8 spring hitch on it and be very safe when hitting a rock or big root.
I can pull my plow with my H Farmall and the plow in "third gear" but that is a full load for it; really need about 35 hp.
The old Servis Co. is no longer in business...now the company is called "Rhino" and I think is still in Dallas.

The terracer without the transmission was built on the model 3 plow. Pictures of the models 8, 3 and F are all in my article in the July-August 1012 Red Power magazine.

Servis was part of Austin Industries (Austin Bridge Company at the time). Austin Indistries sold that business to Alamo Group in 1986. It had operated under the Servis-Rhino name until 1990 but now is under the name Alamo Group. Austin Industries is a very large construction company.

Mr. Becker,
I defer to your knowledge on the Whirlwind Terracer history and to your article in Red Power.
However, if I"d known you were going to do an article in Red Power, I would have sent you pictures of the #8 version I have as my pictures are vastly superior to what you used.

Once in a while I get pictures or information I would have liked to use right after an article comes out. I've learned to live with that fact. Usually it pops up as a result of the article. The biggest example has to be getting a call from a member of the Heisler family after I did the Heisler article. I generally have success getting information or pictures from sources I know. Blind requests for pictures usually come up empty.

As far as the pictures with the Whirlwind article, I had 3 illustrations of the #8. One was from Servis advertising, two were current pictures of the machine in use. One of them was mostly a picture of the dirt in flight. That picture would have been hard to improve on. The other was used mainly to show the machne itself. A nicely painted one would have been good for that illustration. I had one recent picture of a well-painted #8 but I didn't like the picture itself.
