Looking for Parts for an old H

Hello All,

I am helping to get my Bosses' Dad's 44 H (ser. no. 167619) back to near original. How can I find out what parts came on that particular model? I have found several different mufflers and I recall hearing about certain mufflers being cheap and others that had the "good" sound. I would like to find the different types and prices for them to let them decide what they would like. I see some parts places say that certain parts replace certain part numbers but I don't know what part numbers were on it to begin with. Mostly I need help with the muffler but a seat spring has me a little puzzled also. It is mounted above the tube for the seat, it is approximately 2.25" dia. x 6" tall. It is a compression type spring. I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving!

Ken Updike (Carter Gruenwald) has been working on an OEM muffler for about a year. I am hoping he gets those out soon. He is one of the best parts guys in the business, so my money is with him.

The muffler that David mentions will be the ONLY muffler that sounds like the original -- you might be told that OEM Tractor Parts also makes an original muffler -- they don't. All others are cheap imitations with a relatively short life. If you want one with at least moderate quality, buy the one CaseIH sells. Far as I know the ones sold by Carter and Grunewald will be sold only by Carter and Grunewald.

A 44 has the second seat made for the H/M, there were two more later and one earlier. OEM tractor parts and others should have one.

Muffler patterned after part 51070D would be original to that tractor. Numbers and mufflers changed some by the end of H production.Later IH sold the same replacement muffler for H through 350. Also the one for the bigger tractors was listed as a optional replacement. Muffler was considered a attachment when the tractors were built.

I tried several mufflers, none of them sounded right til I got one from the Case-IH dealer. Sounds right, is pretty quiet. Sorta quiet, I still wear ear protection.
