Case IH 234 diesel starting issue

Bought this thing brand new in "86. It has glow plugs and they work. It sets alot but lately you have to crank for extended time when first startup. Fuel filter changed recently and fuel is fresh. After first startup runs great and will fire right off next start(s)same day. Short of a rework on the injection pump is there anything to check or adjust on pump? FYI - 3 cyl. Mitshubishi (sp), no smoke, good power.

My experience with that Mitsu diesel is the glowplugs must be in good shape in order for it to start quickly when cold.

When you crank do you see white exhaust out the stack? If yes, either your glowplugs are failing or the engine is suffering from low compression.

However if the exhaust is clear during cranking it's a fuel delivery issue. Could be a small leak letting air get into the suction side of the injection pump during a long shutdown.
