starter 6 to 12 volt conversion

If you are converting a 6V tractor to 12V you don't need to convert the starter. My H and 300 both would have been 6V new and are now running on 12V. Just don't run the starter for more than 15 or 30 seconds at a time and you should be fine. I find that I mostly press the starter button for a second or less at a time anyway, especially on a tractor with a magneto since it seems to fire best at low speeds. If you really do want to convert your starter there are folks on here who can tell you how.

If you mean starter switch, only need to change to 12 volt magnetic switch or solenoid if you have one mounted on starter. If mechanical switch, no change necessary. So, it depends on what tractor you are working on.

A 6 volt starter will last decades on 12 volts as will a solenoid unless you hold the switch in the start position for a very long time. No fill in the blanks and tell us what your working on so we can help you help your self better. Lack of info makes it real hard for us to help you

I converted several to 12 volts and always kept the old 6 volt starter and all worked okay. A 6 volt solenoid (electric/magnetic switch, if thats what you have versus a mechanical switch) can still work also but if it ever burns out due to too much current and heat simply replace it with a 12 volt.

NOTE 1 it is a bit tougher on starter drives (Bendix) but mine all did okay despite that. Myself and my friend Bob M suggest if you convert and keep the 6 volt starter use a standard or lighter duty 12 volt battery (or even lighter gauge cables) NOT a huge honkin 1000 or more CCA as thats even tougher on starter drives.

NOTE 2 I have heard instances when a tractor had a Magneto ignition that the 6/12 cranking speed was so fast the mags (they do change timing at X RPM ya know) were firing at the advance run timing (maybe 20 BTDC) versus the needed like 0 Degrees start/impulse timing and that causes obviious problems.

(quoted from post at 21:39:29 11/19/12) HEY guys whats the best way to convert 6 to 12 volt starter do you need a 12 volt starter sw.any help. Thanks

My 240U has been changed to 12v and I always had a problem with the starter not engaging every time... it would spin and grind against the starter ring on the flywheel. Finally it quit completely, took it to the local auto-electric shop and told the guy the way it acted before it quit. He said when he repaired it he would change the field windings to 12 v and it would stop that... that it was spinning too fast before the starter drive engaged the starter ring with the 6v windings. Now it not only doesn't grind the gears, it starts faster than it ever did. I think the windings were about $75 in addition to repairing the starter, but it's sure stopped a lot of headaches.
