Farmall H valve adjustment

I adjusted the valves on my sons Farmall H after the head was redone. After adjusting #1 and moving onto 3,4,2 I noticed that one of the rocker arms on #1 is very loose the other apears to be set correctly . It appears almost loose enough to miss the push rod when it runs. I started the process all over and ended with the same results. Does anyone know if it is normal to end with a rocker arm with alot of play? If not what I am I doing wrong?

you have too make sure each cyl. is on tdc of compression stroke before valves can be adjusted.which means you need to feel compression being pushed out of cyl"s. after #1 cyl"s valves are adjusted then turn engine to get #3 cyl on tdc by watching the valves on on #2 cyl.to be on the rock. that means one will be closing and one opening at the same time. next just go down the firing order for the next cyl. which is # 4 to be adjusted. watch #1 cyl. valves to be on the rock. then #2 to be adjusted , watch #3 valves.

The simplest way to do this is just make sure engine is at TDC. With the engine at TDC adjust valves 1,2,3 and 5, Then turn the engine over 360 degress to TDC again and ajust valves 4,6,7 and 8. Valve 1 is in the front and 8 being towards the rear of the tractor. Many manuals say to rotate the engine 180 degress at a time and to me even though you could do this it is extra work and leaves room for not having them as accurate.

why not as accurate? thats the whole idea to watch the running mate.totally as accurate or they would not teach it in mechanic's classes.

It is accurate if you can spin it exactly 180. Without a mark at 180 out it is tough to tell exactly. It is also less work to just rotate it twice. Seems much simpler and if you are right on the mark it could not be more accurate. Do you see any issues with this?

i am saying you dont need a mark of anykind on the pulley to watch for degree's. all you do is just watch the running mate while turning the engine over. when in center of the valves rocking on running mate, thats when your on tdc of cyl. to be adjusted. i do not take spark plugs out either to adjust valves, as some people do to find #1 cyl. compression stroke. not saying anything wrong with doing it your way as i have done that too, lots on 350 chev engines, cause its easier with 8 cyl's.
running mates were taught to me in 1976 when i went to school and got mechanic's licence.

The amount of knowledge on this board is amazing and I have learned a ton and lean on it way too much. Whatever works for you. I never did say you were wrong I just find the way I described very easy and less work and less thinking. If you are doing this on a running tractor the easiest way to determine TDC is turn the pulley to the TDC mark and take the cap off. If the rotor is pointing to #1 you are at TDC the rotor is 180 degrees off you need to rotate the pulley 360.
