this site has 2 choices for decals for a C. one has "mccormick deering" over "farmall".
the other has just "mccormick" over "farmall", with the IH emblem beside the words.
which one is correct for a 1950 white demonstrator?

I think the correct set will be the one with Mccormick over Farmall with the IH emblem in the front of the word Farmall .

Deering wasn't dropped until 1949. So the ones without Deering are more correct. If they are correct for a '49 and later non-demo, they won't be quite correct for a white tractor. The "I" in the IH emblem is transparent in regular decals so the red paint will show through. The demo decals have a red "I". Seems like most restored demos I see have white paint showing through the "I". Some people have put a carefuly placed patch of red paint on their hoods to turn the "I" red.

By the way, the '48-'49 Cs with the McCormick-Deering decal should also have the IH emblem. Your description sounds like it is missing. Doesn't matter for what you are asking about.

this sounds like the preferred set.

it says its on vinyl, but to me, it doesn't look like the I is red. what do you think? i wonder if red tape behind the I would have the same effect as red paint?

That looks like the closest you can get here. I see that the lower line wording is identical on both their McCormick and McCormick-Deering sets. I don't know what is right, but recall they were different. One or the other isn't right, maybe neither.

Using red tape might work OK. I would be concerned if the thickness of the tape shows through as a ridge.
