Brought 2 - 1941 M's from Montana, home to Texas in 2001.Finally, I am now finding the time to work on them. Both tractors have X5 stamped on the plate where the serial number is.What does this mean? Also wondering about fuel. Both have pony tanks, but had not been used for along time before I got them. Are they gas or kerosene or does it matter? Thanks for any help.

No suffix indicates a distillate engine. X1 indicates gasoline only. X5 indicates kerosene. The distillate and the kerosene tractors are both start on gasoline, and then when warm enough are switched over to fuel. "All fuel" is an inappropriate description, and IH never used that term.

"All fuel" is a John Deere thing.

Both the pony tanks have been plugged off. I am assuming that he (previous owner), was running them on gasoline all the time. How much harm is being done running a kerosene tractor on gasoline? Maybe there were some conversons made to them. What's the difference between a kerosene and a gas engine?

No harm. Kerosene is actually harder on an engine because it tends to dilute the oil. My uncle has a 1937 F-20 that belonged to his uncle. It was factory setup for Kerosene but the last time it ran kerosene was WWII . . . and no changes were made to the engine to run gasoline full time (although they did make it so the radiator shutters won't close accidently).

Distillate fuel was phased out sometime in the '50s or maybe very early '60s, and all of those distillate burning Farmalls have been running on gasoline ever since.

It is a safe bet that your 2 kerosene burning Ms have also been operated on gasoline, probably longer than they were operated on kerosene.
