OK here goes, IF that C301 came out of a combine the timing curve it way off from what a C301 in a 806-856 would be as a combine runs at full throttle . Second off what carb is on it ?? this will mess you up big time if your running a 560 carb on a 301 and gas ya have to run the 93 in them , yea someone will come on here and tell ya that you don't need it . And i am to the point that i really don't care what ya run. SO if the dist. needs rebuilt then have it rebuilt by someone that has a dist. machine that knows how to set the advance curve and not some blowhard that OH YEA I KNOW HOW. as there are not many of us OLD TIMERS left that know how. And the next thiing you will run into is that guess what some of the bottom shafts are not available anymore and i could not find the bushing to rebuild the one on my 706 and i had to find another dist. I lucked out and found the LAST new dist for a C291 and it should be here Thursday .

Using a timing light hooked to the coil wire not #1 plug, aim the light at the front pulley. watch the pulley from Idle to full throttle, the pulley should appear steady at any speed, and rotate smoothly to the max. This is a way to look at the distributor cam bushing wear. If worn, it will be herky jerky and not steady. The irregularity (if present) should be no more than about 1/16" of movement. Rebuilding the distributor would be needed. If the pulley does not change position with speed the centrifugal advance needs to be repaired. Jim

You didn't mention the wires. How are they? Your situation covers a wide range of possible difficulties, both electrical and mechanical. I suggest you get a vacuum gauge and install it in the intake manifold. A vacuum gauge tells more about an engine than any other piece of test equipment. It'll tell of a stuck valve, leaking gaskets, late ignition timing, etc. You can find instructions on how to read it in nearly any automotive manual. You can use any gauge that reads 0-30 inches of Hg.
