Need Road Band Advice

I am putting road bands on MD 15-30 with steel wheels. Tractor wieghts about 6500#.

My thought was 3/8 or 1/2 steel for the band and angle iron stays that will be welded to the band and bolted to the rims.

Has anyone had any axperience with road bands as to what works and does not. And to thickness of the band? Placement of band as to inner or outer? Rims do have extentions.

The use of 1/2" material (medium carbon steel) is best. 3/8 will bend and dent. Support on tips of grousers is good, with no span exceeding 13 or so inches. If supports are to be placed between points, they should be of the same strength as the band. Placement on the inside of the steel allows better trailering, and (to me) better look. Tank production manufacturers are able to produce the loops for a nominal fee. Welding the splice should be at least 70,000psi rod, and full depth penetration. Ground flat, the weld disappears. Best of luck Jim

1/2 sounds like the way to go. I plan on using 1/2 angle iron as stand outs welded at band and bolted at rim. Tip toes or growsers never seem to be the same length and shimming I think, looks a little tacky.

Have you put leather belting on your bands, if so how did you hold them on?

Thanks, Bob.

Leather is difficult and short lived. I have used used belting from aggregate conveyors. they are fiber reinforced, and usually in the 3/4" thicknesses (around here we have crushed granite quarries and belts are easy to find for free or for little money) windshield urethane adhesive is the material of choice for sticking it on permanently. Use a skived joint of 15 degree slice angle, and 45 degree across width. Jim
