Belly pump on a Farmall

I have a Farmall SM. Its new to me! The belly pump runs all the time, is this normal? I would like to think that it should be off when the lever is pushed all the way down..

It is turning when ever the clutch is engaged (foot off pedal) this causes no problem for operation because it is open center hydraulics. Output goes to input with no restriction. It can be (and normally is operated with the lever/rod hooked on the rod stop at the hold position. (also no load on the system). If you feel the pump is slowing the engine when the rod is in that position (middle of rod stroke) then possibly the rod lever is not in its correct position on the pump valve. Less likely. Jim

What about it running are you concerned about?

It should not be making a squealing noise all the time, for sure. That indicates its under pressure and the internal valve is not releasing for some reason.

I'm the type of person that just doesn't like the pump running if it doesn't have too.. It's like running the belt pulley all the time. Thanks for the input, its great having a place to ask questions about these old tractors..

For what it's worth, on the F12/F14, and others from that era, the belt pully ran all the time. The F20 and F30 had an shifter ON/OFF on them as well as the Regular. I believe the 10/20 and 15/30 and 22/36 ran the pulley all the time, but I could be wrong.

Ah, ok.

Yeah, there's no easy way to disconnect the belly pump when you're not using it.

It's running in oil, so really, you're not causing much wear if any. It's not out in the open like a belt pulley is, so it's not "dangerous." When there's no load it's only using a fraction of 1HP.

If you bought a brand new STX 500 would the hydraulic pump always be running???

Not really, it just does more because it is bigger. The little utility does the same thing...
