| Haas said: (quoted from post at 21:05:00 10/31/12) I went to NAPA to get a 5 gal can of 80W-90 gear oil today. The can I got is labeled 90 gear oil, but the NAPA guy said that it is 80W-90 gear oil and he showed me that on his computer. It is NAPA number 65-205. When I got it home, I read the label and it says it is GL-1 and is for non EP (exteme pressure) applications. This is for use in letter series tractors and my IH-140. I'm thinking I'm going to take this back, because I think I should be using something rated GL-4 or 5 which is for EP applications. He did not have anything in his small store that was labeled 80-90W, but I looked that up on the internet and I think it would be NAPA number 75213. Should I use what I got, or take it back?? |
65-205 is GL-1 90w mineral oil. good stuff for old tractor trans/rears.
It is not 80w-90 gear oil. 80w-90 is thinner among other things.
I use 65-205 in my early Fords with a pump in the belly..
on other Fords, Farmalls, and JD with no pumps, I use either
65-205 or modern 85w-140 in the rear/tranny.
(can't find straight 140 here, or I would use that to tame old gears)
