McCormick Deereing No.8 Little Genius advice

Afternoon everyone,

I've recently started collecting McCormicks as a university hobby and recently got myself what I believe is a No.8 Little Genius from Ontario, Canada.

The Serial numbers are : Front beam - PO 17184 Rear beam - SA 6002 and there are a few parts with Canada stamps on them.

However there are some differences between mine and some others: Its missing the angled iron piece where the plow name/make label is commonly found, one spring is on the outside of the plow versus both inside (between both beams) and the adjustment arms are adjustable themselves (versus being a solid piece of straight steel.

I have pictures, but I'm not sure how to post them with this site.

Thanks for the advice in advance!

There are some differences between a #8 little genius plow built in canton, il and a #8c tractor plow built in hamilton, canada. Hugh Mackay knew alot about these plows and the differences. You can do a search and find some of his old articles. A little genius plow has diagonal cross members, and a 8c plow has adjustable perpendicular cross members. There is a reduction gear between the quadrant and the adjustment handle for fine tuning on an 8c plow. I have some parts books and an op manual for both plows, that i might be able to help you with.

Your pictures need to be hosted somewhere on the Internet in order to link them in here.

If you want you can post them in one of the galleries to the left, then right-click on the picture, select "Copy Image Location", start a new post, hit the "IMG" button above, paste in the link to the picture, then hit the "IMG" button again.

LC1864,

Do you live in Canada? If so, look up "Ontario Plowmans Association" and contact them. I"m sure they can direct you to one of their members near you. Those fellows know a lot about old plows.

The Hamilton, Ontario built plows usually have "Ace" moldboards which are narrower and longer than the moldboards we use in the Mid-west.

I remember Hugh MacKay (he lived near Strathroy, but is now deceased) always said the Canadian plows were #8 plows, while in the US they are called #8 Little Genius.

Search for Hugh MacKay"s comments on this site; whatever he wrote you could take to the bank!

Here are the links to the photos. So would the Hamilton plows be different as far as painting / restoration goes from the commonly found images of this plow? Where is it possible to get parts for them (missing a landside and CIH or Tractor Supply don't have anything

Thanks again

Your plow is a Canadian built #8 tractor plow. It is often referred to as #8 or #8c depending on what manual or who u ask, but not little genius. From what i remember the paint scheme is the same from the US to Canadian plows.

LC,
If you want some pictures of my #8 Little Genius that I painted as best as I could in accordance with the IH archive materials, I will email them to you but you would have to let me know your address. I haven"t taken the time to figure out how to post them here.

Or try "Implement Photos" on the left side of this page, then type "LA in WI"; a few of the pics might come up...it"s been a long time ago that I put them on there.
