Installing 4000 watt alternator on SH

I have an alternator that was designed for field power to be mounted on a crew truck engine. It's brand new and in box. I was wanting to install on right side of SH and run it with pulley.
Would this be a worthy endeavor? Would a v-belt last on flat belt pulley?

Sure it will work well. The rated RPM of that alternator will probably be close to full output when overdriven by the belt pulley. Be sure to mount it such that it turns the correct direction, and is wired to be both excited correctly and regulated. If hooked to the tractors electrical system, follow the schematics. Jim

If running off the belt pulley gear box, get a two groove blank v-belt pulley available from McMaster-Carr or similar. Put it in a lathe and machine a face that will mount to the pulley flange on the tractor. I think the gear box runs at around 1000 rpm. You will have to calculate the v-belt pulley diameter based on design speed of the alternator and desired engine rpm.

Tuck the alternator under the gas tank. I believe alternators can run in either direction but the fan is probably formed for clockwise when viewed from the front. Other fans may be available from marine, aviation, or industrial vendors. You will need to fabricate a swing mount to tighten the v-belts.

Generator below turns at 3600 rpm at no load engine speed in order to get 60 cycles per second. It is 12,000 watts running at 240 VAC. I had the correct sized pulley but it was attached to an air compressor so I added that too..

Thanks for the picture. What Model is Alternator mounted on? Does it put tractor under load? How is fuel use?

Hey there Hal. It is windy and blowing mist. I have cleaned the gutters and moved vehicles from tall trees. We are waiting for the next shoe to drop.
