I adjusted the float to 1 15/16" open and 1 5/16" closed, put the gasket on, set the venture (sp) into the bowl and fit it over the float. The float seemed to stick on the bowl a little but as I wiggled it up to bolt it in, it looked like it dropped like it should so I bolted it down, hooked everything up, turned the gas on and had no leaks. Opened the choke and she fired and ran good for the most part ( i need to adjust the timing a little i think and fine tune the carb) but what a beautiful sound!!!! I shut it down, looked at the carb and gas was flowing out of it again!!!

could the float be bent so its hanging up on the bowl? The needle seems to want to stick closed and when the float falls far enough away then the needle drops, its not fluid with the float. Should I try a new carb kit (just put a basic kit in at the begining of summer), get a new float, or just take the entire thing to the CaseIH guys up the road and have them rebuild the entire thing? thanks for the advice folks, ~Anthony
 
Float could be sticking. The way I check that is turn the crab up side down then right side up and listen for the float to move. You should hear a diffident rattle sound when you do that if not then yep float is hanging up. Also you have to be sure the float needle seat is good and tight or it too can leak and cause the same problem
 
Heres another question: I replaced the exaust manifold, when I was putting the carb on I noticed the holes that are drilled in the bottem of the manifold were offset. When I bolted the carb on it looked like the outlet of the carb and the inlet of the manifold were not going to line up 100%. Could this not lining up be doing something to the venture (sp) which is allowing gas buy it for some reason? IDK, just a shot in the dark. Bought the manifold months ago on ebay and im sure its to late to return.
 
The brass float lever pivot support could be twisted causing the float to hang up on the bowl. Had this happen on a 400 carb.

Do u have a rubber tipped needle?I had problems with those.i like to find an older one without that tip.
 
First determine if it is leaking from flooding, or from a crack or bad packing on the load needle. Clean it dry it then turn on the fuel. Watch very carefully for the fuel to show up. If it is the float and needle, the fuel should come out of the recessed hole in the bowl near the bottom. If so the needle may be leaking despite the float being up, or the seat gasket is leaking fuel past the seat. With the bowl off, turn on the fuel and gently hold up the float, if it leaks when on, it will leak when off. look closely to visualize the issue. Just a tiny hair in the seat will make it leak. Jim, that is exactly what is happening, its dripping out of the bottem of the bowl like you suggested. When I was setting the carb the needle seemed to be sticking and just not floating like it should, im now guessing that the needle needs to be replaced. Do I have buy another carb kit or do they sell just the needle? Thank you very much Jim... ~Anthony
 
The needle might be able to be finessed to work correctly. The float probably has a little dimple of wear in the area that lifts the needle. This dimple is probably pushing on the needle off center from where it was before replacement, and float adjustment. if you can flatten that worn spot from the other side, or put a tiny bit of solder carefully in it then file it off flat it will allow the needle to move concentrically with the flat area and seal well. if the flat area that touches the butt of the needle is not dimpled, it might be non perpendicular to the needle. Any angle there will offset the needle and cause it to leak. Jim

Unless the case-IH dealer just up the road has some older guys in the service department, it is not likely they will have anyone who is familiar enough with carburetors to understand the finer points.

Just one question. Is the float hinge pin fully secured in the bracket arms? Did you squeeze the split side together just a wee bit so that the pin had to be forced through the hole? If you didn't, there is your problem.

Anyone can take a carburetor apart, throw some new parts in it and put it back together, but it is experience and attention to detail that makes the difference. Even if you have very little experience, you can still get it right the first time if you will just pay attention to detail.
 
I ordered a new float, Jim said there might be a dimple in the float where the needle sits and when i checked it looks like there is a dimple. I will make sure that I that I squeeze that split side together though, now that i think about it, it does go in without having to force it. Thanks for the tip rusty, I appreciate it. Oh yeah, im lucky, i have 2 guys at the CaseIH dealership that are big into the antique tractors and are always working on them but I understand what your saying with all the new tractors being fuel injected. ~Anthony
