Ok I am having a Brain lapse. My starter turns over but doesn"t engage. Am I thinking right, it is the starter drive or bendix. TIA Gregg |

| Have you removed the starter and checked the drive that would be a good place to start |

| The starter depends upon inertia to engage the drive. The armature must get up to speed quickly so that the drive gear will move on the helix before it starts to spin with the armature. Grease on then helix is sometimes enough to keep the drive gear from moving fast enough.
Other possible causes are a broken drive cushion spring or spring a retaining bolt that has backed out. |

| Can be caused by a few things. Weak battery will do that as will the bendex area of the starter being full of oil/grease/dirt and of course a bad bendex will cause that. As will bad teeth on the ring gear. To test if it is bad teeth just turn the engine over by hand say a 1/4 turn and try it. If it spins like it should then could be bad teeth since and engine stops pretty much the same place when shut off |
