Ford C550 manual 4 spd transmission

I have been having trouble with this transmission staying in 1st gear and lots of gear noise when holding it in gear with stick shift and moving. Thought it would be easier to just swap out another tranny than try to tear down and repair this one but seems as though not many of these left around. Truck is a 1963 VIN C55BU382677 and number on top of trans is T98A-148A and on left(drivers) side of trans is T98A-1A. Can anyone tell me what other years of truck 4 speeds will bolt up to my bellhousing and work? If it matters, it is a grain truck and needs a PTO.

T-98 transmissions were rather standard in those days. I feel many salvage yards that have "back Rows" of old trucks, will have what you need. They might have different bolt patterns, but the gears should be mostly interchangable if kept together. Input shafts can be matched to different clutch plates to allow various options.

I am sorry I messed up and posted this on here instead of in Classic car section. I have checked with all the local truck salvages and they have crushed all those old trucks and sent to China so I am kind of in a pickle. I do have a 4 spd out of a 56 F-600 that is good and was originally hoping it would work but it has different casting #s. I can't tell if the bolt pattern is the same.until I get 50+ years of grease and grime scraped off. I think it was a T18 or C18 # cast of top.

It ain't a forsale/wanted forum either but you get beat up if you say something, so I guess it's anything goes.

Wish I could help. I myself am looking for a whole truck, just not a Ford. Would rather have an IH.

I can't tell you what will bolt up and work but if you need internal parts these trucks use T98A and T98 before that .
Diamond T 56-66,Divco 55-66, FWD 58-62, Ford 56-64,
IHC 56-64, Jeep/Willys 55-66, REO 58-62 I think,
Studebaker 56-62 and White 56-70.
Finding one of the above that has the correct main drive gear will not be easy. Seems like evry make used a different main drive gear. You might be better off taking yours apart and inspecting it. Sounds like it could be bearings and maybe a worn counter shaft. Hopefully your cluster gear bearing surface are still good. Have fun.

56 should be a WG T98A , Ford did use a T18 starting in 65 thru 70 and maybe longer in certain applications.

T-98 is not that hard of a transmission to find you're just going to have to look, might have to network (ask around) until you find someone who has an old truck out back or knows someone who does. With Craig's list, Ebay (currently listing 3 T-98 transmissions for sale) and the internet this stuff is a lot easier to do than it was a few years ago.You might end up calling out west and asking yards out there or finding a salvage yard that's not as efficient at getting the old stuff out. Some of the salvage yards in the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, New Mexico, West Texas, Nevada and Arizona aren't as ready or willing to ship scrap because the transportation kills any profit. Looking on the internet the Borg Warner T98 is a preferred transmission for folks wanting to build Jeep rock crawling buggies and there are several sources offering parts, use the internet or get a copy of Hemming's Motor News or their Vintage Auto Almanac, or one of the Off Road or Fourwheeler magazines either will identify vendors for T98 parts. Next statement to argue over this is a manual truck transmission in a 49 year old truck if you're done with harvest and don't need the truck for a while it isn't going to be that hard to adapt a 4 or 5 speed medium duty truck trans to fit, you might need to change a bellhousing, clutch plate or pilot bearing make or adapt some linkage but it can be done and you have some time.

T-98 parts and transmissions should be easy to find and if not a T-18 or a New Process 435 will be a direct bolt in if it also from a Ford. FYI, my 1989 F-150 has the T-18, so you have plenty of years later than your truck to look for. The T-98 reverse as you know is up by 3rd on shifter. T-18 reverse is down by 4th (as is the NP435). Every one of each type I"ve seen has the PTO plate on the side.
I think the NP435 first gear is a little slower. All three are great transmissions

Wow guys! Lots of good info. That reverse location is something I didn't think of. This is a cabover and has that wierd shifter top on trans and linkage. I am thinking I may just pull the top plate off the tranny as it is easy to get to and take a look inside. Thanks and I will let you know what I find.
