No spark from coil wire of J4 magneto. Opened up the unit and found internal coil wire connected to nothing.

To which screw should the wire be connected?

Thanks.

Cap but not the rotor. The mag rotor has a drive gear cast into the lower edge.

Can not be 100% sure but bet it should be hooked to the points. Points should always have the condenser and another wire hooked to them and since I can only see one of the 2 is should have hooked most likely should go to the points

Thanks, Old. Excellent spark from coil now that I've connected the internal wire.

Also excellent blue spark to each plug - when I plug each of those wires into the coil.

But, no spark to plugs thru distr cap.

I'm guessing that remaining problem is rotor button or distr cap???

Could easily be either one, or both. I don't see the rotor in the picture, maybe you removed it? Also, the center button in the distributor cap might be corroded, or even missing entirely.

That J4 magneto uses the same points, condensor, rotor as the IH battery ignition distributor.

Okay, fire coming thru coil wire port into the distr cap. Rotor seems to spin fine.

After I bent the tab on the rotor down (the thin copper strip) and tested again - fire thru all plugs. Would prefer to see more blue, but still good fire.

Points set at .013; plugs at .025.

Old, your bench test approach to these mags is great! Now, I'm going to re-install on engine and see what happens. Oops, I already know that timing is going to be my next issue with this since I've removed the timing gear, etc. in the clean-up, swap parts, whatever process.

As for bench test are you referring to the spin it over and hold on the the plug wire and if you jump 10 feet you know you have spark or what??

YES, YES, that's the test!

And, I do love some "smart-a" responses at times. Helps keep me laughing at myself and keeps a little sanity.

Seems that I've lost sparks thru the plugs again. Wasn't super hot anyway. Wondering if my messing with the rotor has affected it, or if there is something intermittent going on.

Bad rotor can cause that as can points that need to be cleaned up. On a mag points play a very big part and funny how all it takes is one speck of dust and they do not work all the time. I use the flap from a point/plug box to clean points with. Slide it threw the points few times and look at it I bet you see a black line on that flap. As for that spark test that was something taught to me as a kid and once you learn that test it sticks in your mind and even if it hurts but your out where it is the only way you can test it sure as heck works as a test. I do it on lawn mowers all the time when I can not get a spark at the plug. Turn it over by hand and if it hurts then I know the plug is bad

And I was the kid who would grab a-hold of a battery charged electric fence to see my arm jerk and dare other kids to do the same. Perhaps fried my brain a bit as well.

Thanks for all your help.
