Can fast hitch from 400 be added to M

A fellow who isn't color blind asked me a question about Farmalls: could he add a fast hitch from a 400 to an M he would like to buy? Is it a direct adaptation? He wondered if changing the top plate would be necessary or if he needed to drill holes on the top plate or couldn't it be done? I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Not sure with an M but I know the FH from my 300 can't be put on
my H because the bosses (if that is the term) are not there on the
rear end case.

It can be fitted on an M with fabrication work. Mounting brackets would have to be made to attach to the rear end housing and mount the hitch to. Bolts would also have to be swapped out of course. In the long run, an aftermarket 3 pt. would probably be cheaper and less labor intensive.

You have to make plates to bolt to the right and
left axle housings.

There are pics shown in the archives on here.

It has been done several times. M&W also made thes
plates back in the day. ;)

Unless he just wants to do it for entertainment, or has fast hitch implements he wants to use there is no advantage to the fast hitch over that of a good (Saginaw) three point hitch. Neither will give draft control, etc on an M.

The first M sized tractor that will more or less accept a 400 Fast Hitch is the SMTA. Yes, you could swap in the F-400 top frame cover or just make a plate to accept the rigid end of the rock shaft. I've done both. I wouldn't just drill vertical holes into cover unless I could be sure they were "blind". Believe me. They won't be. The 400 frame cover will also need adjustments to accept the steering post. A 450/560 is an easier switch as you don't need to worry about the rock shaft.

If you are good at finding needles in haystacks, you could look for a set of M&W adapter plates for mounting a 450/560 style fast hitch on an M.

They are RARE. You could be looking for years and never find a set.

To mount the hitch right now the best course of action would be to fabricate up your own set of adapter plates.

A 3pt hitch would be so much easier, as it is designed to mount on an M directly with no modification.
