(quoted from post at 18:53:57 10/21/12) how much gas will it use a day working it say discing or plowing

A lot.

I don't have the fuel consumption specifications available here.

Is it a C-263 (early, short frame) or a C-291 (late, long frame) 706?

IF they are tuned properly they are not that hard on gas pulling 4x16 semi mounts running 8-10 inches deep in our ground when that is all i had to farm with i would get 8-10 hours run time on a tank . Depending on if i was on more level ground or on the hills in corn stocks or plowing under sod , and if i was in first high or forth low . Discing with a 13.6 disc with out duals or with duals . Ran a 706 gasser for years when that was all i had. We still have two 706 gassers but they have reached semi retirement and are used for planting mowing and raking hay and wagon pulling , till winter sets in then it is used for feed grinding and feeding silage. . I can mow rake twice 28 acres and drive the 16 mile round trip on one tank. we go thru about 300 gallon of gas each year thru one 706 and four oil changes.
P/S they are not Toyota's and they do not get 35 miles to a gallon and neither does a pick up working pulling a trailer , If you had a gas burning pick up pulling a trailer and got 10 miles to a gallon and you could stay at 55 in one hour of driving you would burn up five and a half gallon of gas and you would think your doing great. So how come everybody freaks out when a tractor burns five or six gallon and hour is bad. My buddy's 2255 Oliver will suck down around 8-10 gallon and hour on just field work , put the silage chopper behind it and on the main tank you get just three hours of run time before ya have to feed it.

and as far as the great gas vs. diesel debate, each has it's place. And with diesel nearing a dollar more a gallon in some parts of the country it narrows the difference of fuel costs.

You also need to factor in potential expense of repairs.

Lots of owners can keep a gasser running where a diesel might be a little above their skill level to repair if something goes wrong.
