My H just surprised me with POWER

I've had my grandpa's '52 H now since Memorial Day. I've taken it on a dozen or so short drives and noticed it lugged down on the hills quite a bit, but just assumed it was either normal or I needed to do some tuning.

Well... I just got done with some recent changes and thought I should run it around and make sure I stopped the leaks I thought I did and see how it ran. I changed transmission oil, replaced a couple felt seals and installed a new manifold. [b:47641373d1]It seemed like a brand new machine!!![/b:47641373d1] It had tons of power up the hills, was louder at full throttle and seemed to be going faster in 5th than it ever has.

I think I figured out why. It was really puzzling at first. I was thinking "did the new manifold make a difference?". Why would that change anything??? However, the more I thought about it I figured it out. When I had the manifold off I was able to get behind the governor where the governor input arm is. I knew it still had a lot of dirt and crud packed in there and I worked for quite a while to clean that out since I could get to it easier. I must have gotten rid of enough crud that the input arm has full travel again. I'm just amazed. That was a fun discovery today :)

My SH did that when I first bought it.All I could
get from it was an idle. Finally removed the governor
and chipped all the hard crud off with a
chisel!Amazing what some throttle movement will do.

Looks like your engine doesn't need a rebuild after all. That's awesome. Now you can use that money and go out and buy another tractor! Make it a collection.

We had you all convinced that you were looking at an expensive engine rebuild, when it simply needed some unconventional maintenance. Unfortunately, going by your descriptions that was the only conclusion we could make.

Too many vagaries in the written word... Example, you hear a clank, describe it to us as a clunk, and we think clink when we read your post. The problem goes from a simple mud dauber nest to a full engine rebuild... It's a form of mass hysteria or something.

Been there done that on chiseling out the crud behind the governor case. Glad you found the problem!

Actually, mkirsch, I think you have me confused with another person. I didn't have any plans to rebuild it. I was just pleasantly surprised to see the power increase when doing "nothing" to get it.
