splitting revisited

Ready to split the SM. Where would be the best point to split at...front of bell housing or at the tranny/bellhousing? I have the top of the tranny off and tractor tore down to just motor tranny and rails. Thank you.

What are you going to work on? Most common split is at bell housing. I have s set of split stands I made to support the engine, front end then rolled the back part away on a support with wheels. I have also done it by supporting the rear with a heavy floor jack, chained to tractor rear end. Helps if you have cement floor for that.

If you're doing the clutch, it needs to be split right behind the engine. Can't really think of a reason to split it in front of the transmission.

Thank you for the quick response. Will be replacing clutch along with finishing the transmission rebuild. I purchased a splitting stand for front of tractor and was planning on using cherry picker to hold rear section up and slide to rear.

You can say that again! The first time I split my 544 I did it on gravel. I used lots of timbers and come-alongs to skid it on the timbers while maintaining alignment, but it was still a pain. Then there was getting it back together...

The second time I used a concrete floor. A cracked one. I"m not sure it was better than the gravel.

Oh, and you really want to make a set of alignment dowels. Just grind the heads off some appropriately-sized bolts.

What I would do is get 4 long bolts the correct size and cut the head off two of them. I use the first two, slide it together and install the other two as well.

Sounds like an iffy plan to me. That cherry picker isn't meant to do that. Also, they are very tippy with a heavy load. There is NO way it is rated to handle that kind of weight.

I use a jack and cribbing on the rear and roll the front forward. It seems popular with the little tractor guys to move the rear back, but my stands are made to roll the front. That is the way most pro mechanics stands are that I have seen around here.

I think Cherry picker is a bad idea. Be real careful, the front half is real top heavy. I would make a splitting stand.

I know Im gona catch flak over this but the clutch can be replaced without spliting. Drop hyd pump, input shaft is 2 piece. Throw brg hsg is bolted on. Put 3 bolts in pressure plate to compress it. I have done this a couple times.

That won't work on a SM because the clutch is an inch bigger than an M. You also can't turn the flywheel and I will give you flak for that.
