Adding LH to '42 M

Wanting to take the Dual loader off my SH and put on my M but I first need to add live hydraulic. Whats the procedure? Is there a specific pump I need to look for fitment or pressure wise or are they all comparible as long as it came off an M/SM/400/450? Also being an early M, I need to change the distributor drive gear correct? What am I looking for there? Thanks!

A new 'mag pump will cost around $800.That,plus the other parts, you could have lots more in it.Just buy an M with that already installed.Or,hang a $500 'Farmhand' gearpump(speacially made for loaders) on the front framerail and chain drive it off the crankshaft.Thats a pretty common deal.Or put a pump on the PTO and deal with the nonlive power.I do every day.Its not hard or difficult...

Dont plan on a new pump...going to hold out till I find a good deal on a used one. Just need to know what to look for. Will keep the others in mind...probably get more GPM either of those ways correct? Thanks!

Good luck on finding a 'good used' mag pump.A mag pump wasn't designed for the 'stresses' of heavy loader work.A pto pumpWill give lots better service.A pto pump can also be mounted up front.

I see. What about moving the battery under the seat, and running a chain drive pump off the belt pulley? I like the idea of the pump be tucked away under the tank...would that be a fire hazard though?

Otherwise Ill look for a PTO pump...around 15GPM Im guessing?

You can do that.I once had a '40 M that I set up that way.Worked pretty good.Only I used a vane pump and mounted it under the belt pulley. The battery stayed in its spot.I like your idea better...

A good Prince PTO pump that is rated for a 40 HP tractor will kill the engine if you dead end the cylinders too long. That is what mine will do, and it works just great and it is what i would recommend.

the big problem with the m up until the very late m's, was the mounting holes for the pump. the top two dont line up. also, you need to change the camshaft gear to the late m/super m gear. the early ones were light and would break with the stress of the live pump, especially on a loader. it is possible to plug the top two holes with bolts, cut them off, file surface flat and re-drill and tap new holes. they will take about half of the bolt plug out when drilling. or you can change the front cover to a super m -400 cover.
