What kind of paint for a new muffler?

I just bought a new muffler for my H from one of the online parts stores. It looks real nice and fits well. Of course it had a sticker on it with the part number. I started to peel it off and it is one of those that doesn't come off very easy. After I tore most of the paper off I just had the adhesive left. I thought, I've got some acetone, that will take the gummy stuff right off.... well it took the paint right off too. I'm not sure what they paint those with, but it came off super easy.

So, I guess I need to paint my brand new muffler. [b:9688be560a]Any paint suggestions?[/b:9688be560a] I'm thinking something in a rattle can.

Thanks!

Yep, most of the mufflers come with REALLY CHEAP PAINT!. I'd use laquer thinner and wipe all the old paint off. Then dry sand with a DA air sander and 360 papre. Then repaint with your favorite silver hi-temp rattle can.A tack coat, then two wet coats.

I get the best life out of mufflers if I coat the inside with a can of high temp or BBQ paint. The color does not matter, but silver overspray is less obvious than black.

There is a ceramic type paint that is made just for that type of thing and works well. Most any good auto parts store will have it in many colors

When I repainted the muffler on my "M" I used regular hi-temp paint and it burned and made a mess within just a few minutes. I went back to the store and got manifold paint. It's been on there 4 years and still looks great.

Ha - I just did exactly the same thing to a muffler for My H, except I used laquer thinner!
Installed muffler and ran engine. Then I couldn't stand that there was this rectangle of missing silver paint (where the label was) so I figured that the paint came off so easily, I'll just wipe the rest of it off. NOPE, it seems once it got hot the paint baked on and now the laquer thinner won't touch it! Guess I'll be painting mine too.

Rubbing alcohol will remove the adhesive without damaging the paint. It's a trick I learned way back in about 1970 while working at the local Ford dealer. Best method out there for removing bumper stickers from used cars.

VNT makes a spray can of hi heat silver or black. that with stands
2000 degrees heat, I use it every time with a few light coats, and it
never burns off, looks very nice for years. Make sure its the high
HEAT 2000 degree. not the high TEMP 1200 degree. many local
hardware stores carry it.

Can't remember exactly the product, but I used a Dupli-color paint rated for 2000 degrees.

I followed the directions for "baking" the paint onto the muffler, and it's been perfect ever since.
