H charging problem

Our H with battery ignition and cutout relay would charge every now and then if we whacked the cutout with a screwdriver so I replaced the cutout with a VR and it worked great for about a week. Now it will not charge and will only run until the battery discharges and then quit. The ammeter shows discharge with the ignition on when it isn't running and when the lights are on. I have adjusted the third brush on the generator but have it set as close as I dare (3.2 commutator bars) to the fixed brush. It will charge a little if I push the front contacts of the VR together, but it won't stay charging. Am I on the path to a new VR or is the generator too weak? Thanks for any help!

How old is the battery? They're really only good for 5 years max. My Super M acts like your machine when its got an old battery. Having to whack the VR now and again is a hint that a new battery is in my future.

Considering what I paid for the current battery I'm thinking to go 12v when we're due again.

Good thought as those 6V batteries don't last long, but this was a new battery this august.

This will make it work. If all grounds are good, and the wire from the light switch to the F terminal is no longer being used (it is not needed with a VR) the answer should be within these procedures. Jim

My 6 tractor batteries (6 volt) are all nearing 5+ years old and doing fine. If the battery is not kept charged properly, it will certainly suffer an early demise.
In the winter, the batteries are kept in an unheated garage and a battery tender is used about once a month until spring.

I wish I had power where my tractor is stored, I'd put a battery tender on the battery all winter...

Those cheap regulators made in China are junk. The longest I was able to get a Rural King regulator to last was 11 months. A generator is perfectly capable of operating a VR, in fact in the 50's, most were using a VR instead of a cutout. As far as a fix if you are completely down, open the black cap on the VR and file the points on the side with the smaller winding.

Sounds like you got the wrong regulator. Did you get the one thats listed for your generator as the replacement regulator for a three brush gen is different. Make sure your reg is for a 1101355,423 as gens 1100501,523 Take a different reg and should come with instructions how to install.
