I'm trying to do long distance diagnostics on my brother's 300 utility. He said it starts with good oil pressure, runs (rough)for a while, pressure drops to almost nothing and then it dies. Oil level is fine and no sign of water in oil. The low oil pressure is a great concern but I also don't understand the symptoms.

The low oil pressure is probably caused by the engine RPM dropping down very low so pressure drops off at the same time. As for the fix the lack of info makes it hard for us to help much. He needs to check spark blue/white and jumps a 1/4 inch gap and a good steady flow of gas out the carb drain plug catching it to look for water/dirt/rust.

I remember the 300Us that we had has being very touchy for ignition problems. Dad and Uncle kept cap, points, condensors, plugs on hand for them all the time.

Never had any problems from the 300U I have here. Set a battery in her and gas in the tank and off you go even after sitting a year. If no go clean the points and you go

If fuel is getting to the carb (constant stream for 2 minutes or so) and if choking it doesn't help at that point, ignition is where to look.
Points adjustment Distributor bushing wear (no side to side play should be felt at all, .001 max looseness) points adjusted to .020".
and still no joy, a new condenser is next. then a new coil. Do not replace more than one thing at a time. When it has a fat blue 1/4 inch spark that is no longer an issue. Jim

Thanks guys. It's frustrating not being there to help the my big brother. He is willing but not very mechanical. He knows how to check plugs but probably doesn't know about setting valves, checking the carb or even points. Fortunately, He has some mechanical friends and I sent him the Blue Ribbon service manual. If he can get it tuned and it doesn't cure the problem, I may post again for more advice. BTW, I have a 300U also and like old's tractor, it is very reliable.

Yep I understand you completely but then if you think about it how many people do people like me answer in a given day trying to help other with there tractors?? I get phone calls and e-mails and do it this way so yep I understand the guy who if he grabs a wrench he breaks things

Worst thing is the communication. He says "clank" but if you were there you'd call it a "clunk" and diagnose a completely different problem.

His idea of "a while" may be less than 2 seconds in reality, and the tractor really is never starting.

Simplest thing to do is have him pull the choke button and see if it makes a difference.
