Good morning, a few questions on an M I picked up a few weeks ago. When I got it it was filthy, when i pulled off the air tube to carb, there was gas in the tube. After rebuilding the carb there continues to be gas in the inlet where the choke is when sitting. Am I correct in thinking maybe the float is adjusted wrong? The valve and seat are new. Also, whats the valve for just above the carb in the intake manifold?????? Thanks!! |

Ya have to remember that this carb is a UP DRAFT carb , now if the gas is running out on the floor and making a puddle with a non stop drip or stream you will find some gas in the choke horn . when you shut the engine the gas that is going up the manifold stops going up when the piston that is drawing up stops and that gas will fall back down and it will drip out the weep hole in the bottom of the carb and it will make a spot on the floor or dirt . But if you enjoy taking it apart and putting it back on thinking that it is not wright you will get better at it each time .

The valve was used when the electricity went out & the cows needed milking. The vacuum from the engine would operate the milkers for Farmer John.

I would agree either the float is not adjusted to the right height, I think it's 5/16, or trash is keeping the needle from seating. Looks to me like you have a distillate manifold and what you're seeing is the heat valve. Is it a distillate tractor? Does it have an X3 suffix on the serial number...I also noticed the lack of an opening in the hood for a distillate tank, if the hood is off that tractor...

Can you see the little inspection cover under the carb on the engine? My other M and SM do not have that either. What could that be for?

Plate behind the carb is a fuel pump mounting place. Probably a new replacement block at one time or from a power unit ETC. Make sure the float isn't getting fuel inside it due to a leak or that its not rubbing the sides of the carburetor bowl. When mounted on a tractor I like to use a plastic nozzle extention like comes with brake cleaner up through the drain plug. With a little practice you can push the float up by pushing under where the needle valve and seat is. Float should go up with gentle pressure and fall back as you let off. Can feel or hear the float drag if there's a problem.
