I've pulled the dual speed PTO unit from the IH 1066 tractor. If I pull the extension shaft out as well, can I put a cover over the hole and run the tractor without the PTO unit in it. Will everything further inside, stay in place without the PTO unit being on the tractor?

Thanks for your help.

Yes thats how we got dual speed IPTO for 14/15 series, IH would only ship from factory 1000 RPM IPTO, Then we would order 540/1000 as attachment if we deleted on new order for tractor any IPTO, 766/966/1066 all the same unit.

Need to add that IH shipped tractors with delete IPTO had a factory cover plate, we had these laying around for various uses. You might find one at a older dealer yet.

I am trying to remove the IPTO housing to replace the 540PTO Shaft. I can only back it off /2 inch and it will not go any further. Manual speaks of a driven shaft that has to be worked off but I do not have enough room to visually see the shaft. Got any suggestions. Need input ASAP. Thanks

I am working on my IHC 966 Model Tractor with a broken 540 PTO output shaft. I am trying to remove the IPTO Housing; however, I can only back it off a half-inch. The manual says "you may have to work the driven shaft off of the input shaft; however, I cannot visually see the driven shaft from where I am working and therefore I cannot make it move. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me.

Ed, you get better visibility starting a new topic.

As for your issue, all I can suggest is use a bigger pry bar.
