Farmall H tranny gears

I have a early '39 H, tranny makes a knocking sound in all gears, I bought a '44 for parts but it has X6 low speed gears and is to good to part out so i will fix it. Purchased a '47 parts tractor started cleaning it up this evening to tear it down and after further cleaning see that the serial number ends with X1A, also low low gears? Can I change out parts between the tractors as long as I use all of the gears? Are gears, shafts and bearings interchangeable on any year H? Any thoughts on what is causing the knocking sound? Thanks, Mike

If all gears includes 5th, the drive coupling in front of the trans, (not in it) could be coming apart. It has the look of a U joint, but when bad makes noise. I think you could see it through the inspection plate just behind the Belly pump. If 5th is knock free, it could be a chipped tooth (or broken) on the constant mesh gear, or a bad front input bearing. Look at the coupling first.
As far as I know the gears will interchange as a whole set. Jim

The other thing is that if your 39 still has the early PTO you may have to change it to the late PTO when putting in a countershaft from a later tractor.
