New toy, 54 Super C

I was on my way to work the other day, and happened to catch an auction as I was passing by. I noticed a little Super C coming up quick so I pulled in and registered and checked it out. It appeared to be pretty sound, with new rubber all around, and a fast hitch. I ended up bidding on it and to my surprise there was only one other guy bidding against me on it. Of course most of the people at the auction appeared to be there for more household items than a farm tractor, but long story short I ended up taking it home for a more than fair price. I went and cashed out to pay for it and called my Dad and had him load the trailer up as I had to hurry up and get to work. Anyways, he got it home for me and I haven't really had a chance to check it out much yet, but it seems to run pretty good from what I can tell. Here's a few pictures.

I never ceases to amaze me how people can screw up the circle decal on a letter series tractor.

There's this nice curved bead rolled right into the steel that matches the size and shape of the circle decal PERFECTLY... How is it not obvious? No, let's stick it on the grille. No, let's stick them on the gas tank. No, let's stick them BEHIND the bead.

That`s a pretty straight Super C you got there ! I like it. It`s even got the original IH muffler with the smaller outlet pipe on it yet. Unless it`s a repro, which it doesn`t look like it is. Good tractor.

I know, it doesn't take rocket science to figure it out. I don't get some people, half the rest of the decals are in the wrong spot too, it's surprising they got FARMALL where it's supposed to be. It's been driving me nuts looking at this thing with the decal in the wrong spot.

What is the big iron turn buckle laying on the right hand side of the foot rest in the 2nd picture? Looks like you got a keeper!

(quoted from post at 19:35:10 10/15/12) My granddad always said he thought his C would plow anything his H would.

Heck you should see what my Ford 8N will plow. With the SC being a little heavier it should do better than my Ford. Biggest problem with the Ford is traction, I'm going to have to load those tires. The Ford has the SC by 1 HP at the drawbar but with the extra weight the SC should plow rings around the Ford.

(quoted from post at 16:34:21 10/15/12) is it a super c or a 200, or a 230? tough for me to tell

It's "dressed" like a Super C anyway. The 200 and 230 grilles have much wider slots, and fewer of them. The 200 and 230 hoods do not have the bead rolled in them that shows you where the circle letter decal is supposed to go.

One telltale sign of a 230 from a distance is the lack of touch control rockshafts under the gas tank. There is a hydraulic reservoir under there, but no "arms" sticking out.

Ultimately, it could be any of the three tractors as they were nearly identical underneath, and anything from one of them could be bolted on to the other two models, with few exceptions. It could very well be a "mutt" or "frankentractor."

Officially, whatever it says on the serial tag, is what the tractor is regardless of whatever else is bolted on. Tag apparently says 1954 Super C, so that is what it is.

(quoted from post at 06:07:04 10/16/12) thanks

Everything dates to '54 but it's defiantly a Super C, according to the serial tag as well. Also it appears the engine has been replaced. It is a C123 but I'm assuming out of a combine or power unit of some sort.

Based on??? I'm not seeing it. The block cut-out for a starter is the usual sign.

I just bought its twin for $600 cause it wouldnt start.54 with fast hitch, wheel weights on front and new paint,Had no fire at coil, hooked switch back up and started it.Just drilled wheat with it.I love these lil C's

The SC's all had the 123 engine in them, what makes you think this one has bee replaced? Nice looking tractor.

I`m kinda curious too. Like Jim says, usually there`s a cut out for the starter on the power unit engines and sometimes you see a plate on the right side of block where a fuel pump would have gone. I see no evidence of either.

No real idea other than the guy I bought it from said the engine was replaced by his brother before he passed, and that it came out of a power unit. Regardless of what it came out of it, it seems to run good and I've been having fun with it since I bought it!
