Sputtering engine when trying to start

Hello Folks; While cranking engine, the engine only sputters badly. Could I get some suggestions as to what might cause this? Thanks in advance. (I am guessing there could be several causes)

Fuel messed up, Ignition messed up, valves messed up or it's worn out and won't run without TLC (tender loving cash).

I would check the point setting first (but that may be useless if it is a diesel!! Help us. Jim
