I haven't received my manuals yet but I'm wondering if the verticle steering (bolster?) shaft on my '55 300 with a factory wide front can be adjusted. Mine has quite a bit of play and moves up and down during turns. If the thing is worn out are they available new or reproduced?

I have same issue with vertical slop on H, have also thought about tapered roller bearings.

The vertical movement of the shaft was one of IH's not so good ideas. The front is actually designed for a narrow front where the weight of tractor is supported by the lower thrust bearing. The top, under the gear, under those conditions would not touch the gear or housing. So, we put a wide front on, and it goes up and down because no weight is being supported and the gear climb up and down the worm as you turn back and forth. What you can do , first off, make sure the upper and lower bushings are ok, upper gear housing holds gear lube and you can look up a hardened washer and install it under the top gear to minimize the up and down movement. It may very well take trial and error to get right thickness. That gear sets on a tapered spline and it has to be tightened very tight. Not having it tight will cause wear on splines and then you have worse problems. I always felt they should have put tapered roller bearing on both ends. They finally did on the 4 and 560's and later models..
