I recently went to move my 450 after having set for 4 months and when I started to move it felt like the brakes were on so I pulled the torque back and it moved and rolled freely. Is there something out of adjustment or is something froze up in the clutch ? Any advise would be greatly appreciated . Thanks I have always got good advice on this site . |

I have seen the overunning clutch lock solid and therefore you are in effect locked in two speed at the same time when you have ta lever ahead. I remember it on a 656 one time. Throw the lever ahead and almost kill engine before you could pull it back again. The rollers were jammed solid. Works fine in Ta but won't free wheel either.

The TA lever releases the front TA disk clutch. If the TA is needing adjustment, one symptom is that the regular foot clutch pedal fails to move the TA clutch to the release position (which it should) when the foot pedal is pushed in just a little farther than the point at which the main clutch stops driving the wheels. When this happens, the power train can, and does, put pressure on that TA clutch in a reverse direction. This force is transferred from that clutch to the TA body, which cannot be turned backwards because there is a sprague or "one way" ramp and roller device (also called a clutch) which locks up in that direction. If the tractor is in a forward gear, and the land slopes rearward, the drive train will feel like it is binding. The gears will be nearly impossible to shift, and the tractor will not roll rearward. If it is in reverse, the tractor will feel like it is hanging and unable to roll forward. Clear indication of improperly adjusted TA. Also hard on shifting mechanisms, and gear teeth if forced out of gear. If this is it, adjust the TA There are many references in the archives from Me and the Tractor vet and others describing the essence. Manuals can be very effective if the pivot pins and linkages are not sloppy. If they are, repair as needed. At least it is not broken, and easy to fix from the outside standing up!! Jim.

I may not have made my problem clear. It only fells like the brakes are dragging when it is gear. But if I pull the torque back it seams to release and will move like normal.

Jim's last sentence is suggesting that you make a slight adjustment to get it to work properly. My 400s need a slight adjust as well. SDE

There is nothing in the TA that would cause a bind unless the bearings were going out in the trans input from the TA unit. Not likely. If the TA clutch was bad, it would have only speeds associated with TA back. if the Ta clutch was frozen to the TA housing, or TA Pressureplate, the tractor would operate like it was in direct (TA forward). Again no real issue other than being stuck in direct. Brakes could have been binding and act stuck if, for instance, the brake pedals were locked together, and latched down. I think it was a coincidence of brakes and the TA. If it runs and the TA works with no extra noise. Run it. It is always a good idea to fine tune the TA engagement point. Jim
