Generator on an A question

I'm in the middle of replacing the electrical system on my A. I just got the generator but am still waiting on the cut out so I can set it up My question is can I run the tractor with the generator attached but none of the wiring hook up. If I can't then I've got to get the generator belt off before I run the tractor.I don't want to chance doing something to the generator- they aren't cheap anymore.

No wires on it then it will just be the same as having an idler pulley there so yes you can run it with no wires hook to it and not hurt it

Where are you going to get a cut-out as they dont have the originals anymore. What generator did you get as there are different regulators for them is it a three brush or two as they do take different regs and the cut-out was not made for the two brush set-up you are talking about a Farmall A correct. Not recomended to run the gen with nothing attached just disconect the belt tie it out of the way no need to ruin a good gen.

What would be the correct set up. The generator was bought off this web site - 6V. I'll have to look in the morning if its 3 brush or 2. Tractor has a mag if it makes any difference.

If you don't care about originality, ANY cutout of the proper voltage will work

You can make one out of a great big diode. Just put it in series with the armature to battery mounted on a heat sink. You will have to use the insulation washer kit with the diode, and thermal grease, or insulate the heat sink.

I know the purists will hate it.

Actually, you should ground the armature terminal so it will not build any voltage due to residual magnetism in the pole shoes. Leave the field terminal open. If you don't believe me, hook a volt meter on open armature terminal. You may build high voltage or may not build voltage but if it is grounded you know it will be safe.

Delco Remy#1101423,1101355 were the original ones and you need the regulator for that # if its a 1101501,1101531 it will take a different reg just be sure to get the reg for # on your gen. Car Quest has them and they are made in the USA

If any one will work why do they list different ones for different gens as the three brush ones do take a different reg than the two brush ones i have fixed too many charging systems on the old I-H
